Big Feelings

  • The Friendship Community Center 201 W Broadway Suttons Bay, MI USA (map)

They have big feelings. You have big feelings.

As parents we can quickly find ourselves in a place we didn’t intend. Have you found yourself doing the very thing you don’t want to do as a parent? Us too.

Come and see how body-based practices (somatic practice) can support you. Skill up in your capacity to care for your kids when emotions begin to flow -- theirs and yours! Our approach is committed to dispelling the shame that can creep in both for you and your kids as we find our way together.

Join this 5-week group where you can meet other parents who are practicing tapping into the wisdom of their bodies as a support for navigating the stress and magic of parenting. We will learn a variety of body-based practices derived from Strozzi Institute and generative somatics that can support us in caring for ourselves as we care for and raise our children. We will explore how we experience triggers and big emotions while parenting. We will explore what resources us in our parenting, looking to the body as our guide. We will look at the ways parenting is impacted by the identities we hold and the pressures of the world in which we live. Sessions will include practice, discussion and connection with fellow participants. All levels of experience with somatics are welcome.

What do we mean by embodied?

We hold that our lived experience and histories live in our bodies and shape our words, actions, beliefs and how we are relationally in our lives and parenting. We are shaped by the world around us. When we are seeking change we can often think or long for how we want to be different and not know how to get there. Our bodies hold deep essential wisdom that can guide us to our longings and live into the way we desire to parent.

Feeling intimidated about embodied practice?

One of our somatics teachers says, "You can't do somatics wrong." There's no right way to practice - it's as simple as an invitation to begin to notice the life of your body by bringing awareness to your sensations, moods, where you hold tension, etc. There's no wrong way to be in the body. You get to be in choice throughout the course, no forcing change here!

Facilitated by: Lucy Waechter Webb & Tess Waechter Smith (two LMPSA parents!)
